my next build

I’ve been contemplating building a townie bike for some time now, the closest I got was swapping out my bullhorns for a set of porteur bars but the geometry of a track frame still isn’t quite relaxed enough. The other day I happened across a seemingly true 700c wheel on the sidewalk with a shimano coaster hub. Luck! I’ve been browsing local used bike shops (via bike!) for the right parts and light lugged frame. Above are a couple bikes I happened across that are giving me some ideas of what to do with my next build.

Raleigh & Rainier

I’ve seen these beautiful frames pop up here and there via blogs, flickr, etc. in both cyclocross and track versions. The track version looks to me like Raleigh has updated their design for the discontinued Rush Hour Pro so I’m hoping that the frame will be available for the public at some point. I would be proud to own either frame but the track version is especially mighty fine.

Philadelphia & The Law

Two bills will be introduced into City Council on Thursday Councilman DiCicco will be introducing a bill would require registration of all bicycles owned by persons 12 and older. Councilman Kenney’s bill will raise the fines of sidewalk riding from $50 (which was already raised from $10 in June), and for wearing headphones from $50-$100 dollars to $100-$300 and for bicyclists without brakes face a $1000 fine or confiscation of the bike.

These bills will be first read and sent to committee, which will hold hearings at a later date. Council seems willing and able to listen to our concerns and these bills will most likely be amended before being brought to the hearing.

Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia

Not to mention the proposed $20 registration of all bicycles in the city. Are “scofflaw” bicyclists going to be caught because of some tiny registration number? Are police going to actually pursue stolen bikes? Nope, nope, and nope. Am I really going to get pulled over by a fat bike cop? Catch me if you can. I leave you with this…

Tweed Ride

This weekend yours truly took part in the second annual Philadelphia Tweed Ride. 105 people dressed down on their bicycles taking over the city and generally having an amazing time on what was a perfect autumn day. I hauled around my Linhof Technika 4×5 camera on my back and used up all but my last sheet of Polaroid 54 film. I suppose the last sheet will have to be for a special occasion of some sort? For more pictures of the event visit the official Tweed Ride Philadelphia website.

Bertelli

A gentleman that goes by the name of Francesco in New York City builds up these bikes and sells them to customers who don’t have the time to source pretty shiny rare parts and put it all together into a tasteful package. Much like buying a car that’s already been perfected by a car tuner? His aesthetic as a “bike tuner” is classic, no frame decals, threadless steams, or futuristic saddles. Just straight leather, metal, and rubber. Prices? Not as bad as they could be I suppose. Bertelli Biciclette Assemblate

The Townie

Maybe you value comfort and class over speed and high performance parts. Thats ok, here are some parts and accessories that are essential to the townie bike. Combine them with a relaxed geometry frame and a single or three-speed drive train, perhaps a coaster brake for easy and fun braking. Details and links after the jump.
