Velorama

Velorama is a French dealer of vintage and collectible parts. I love how oddly mundane these parts are photographed against the textured background, the arrangement of new old stock Campagnolo hoods is especially weird.

Cinelli Pope

Rumor has it the bar was made by Cinelli in the 80’s for Pope John Paul II’s white Colnago and generally referred as the Pope or Priest bar for that reason. They’ll pop up on ebay every now and then but Cinelli now makes the Vallencia which only comes in a matte black finish (womp womp) and a 31.8mm clamp. Until I find a pair I’ll continue to stand by the Velo Orange’s more backswept Porteur bar.

Cross Fan

Photographs by Chris Milliman whom you might recognize for his newsprint zine Home and Away that he did for Freeman Transport last spring. These photos were taken in Flanders, a region located in present day France, Belgium, and the Netherlands, well known for its love of cyclocross. Cyclocross is certainly more of an exciting spectator sport (to me) than road racing where you simply stake out a spot and wait for the peloton to pass by- though you can’t really tell if these fans are having much fun or are just standing around getting pissed (and then peeing on things). Read on for a cross fan kit..

Personal builds from the staff of Velo Orange, a pretty good scale of styles here: fixed, rando, and a decked out crosscheck. See the rest here.

A Sunday in Hell

A documentary on the 1976 Paris-Roubaix by Jørgen Leth featuring Eddy Merckx and Francesco Moser amongst other notable riders of the time. Although it’s not on netflix someone was nice enough to upload the entire film on youtube– lucky you.

Tweed Ride III

This year’s Philly tweed ride was even bigger than the last, not sure of the final head count but I had a good time riding in a sea of tweeds, herringbones, and tartans. I was pretty into the corduroy knickers on the gent pictured above, gotta find myself a pair for next year’s ride.

Porteurs

Races between bicycle couriers have been established long before today’s alley cat races, the French have been staging races between couriers as early as the late 19th century. The French Critérium des Porteurs de Journaux consisted of a route around Paris with a series of checkpoints. Each racer starts with a 15 kilogram load of newspapers, at each check point they had to swap out their load for a new stack of newspapers of the same weight and then make their way to the next check point. All this in 27 kilometers of Parisian streets. The final stretch of the race was an 800 meter climb up the roughly cobbled Rue Lepic to the finish line at Montmarte- the highest point of Paris. Sounds fun right?

Bilenky Cycle Works

Bilenky is a local builder that does it all: track, cross, rando, porteur, road, couplers, and especially well noted for their tandems. Pictured is Stephen Bilenky himself with one of the biggest head tubes I’ve ever seen in my life and a beard that channels Sheldon Brown’s spirit. Stephen is the man behind the first and upcoming Philadelphia Bike Expo on Halloween weekend which I’m pretty excited about because there’s bound to be some good rides and races to take part in as well loads of great vendor booths.
