Round 2: Levis & Filson

This year’s collaboration between Levi’s and Filson has brought some interesting pieces such as Levi’s iconic trucker jacket constructed in Filson’s Shelter Cloth with rugged details like a full sized game pocket and zippered storm flap; last year’s well-received trucker jacket in Filson’s Tin Cloth is also being offered again this season. Also worth mentioning from this collection is the Levi’s 505 jean made from Filson’s Tin Cloth, I have a pair of LVC 505’s in raw denim and the fit is great- slim in the seat and straight in the leg without being too wide. With the aid of the Tin Cloth’s ability to resist wind and water they could make for a decent winter commuting pant. All American made and available at both Levi’s and Filson.

Note: denim hunting vest may not actually be constructed with Granny Smith apples but make for a neat William Tell reference.

Untouched Waters

Swedish photographer Henrik Bonnevier spent 100 days in the remote Lapland region of Sweden spending his time hiking, fishing, and of course taking pictures. See more of his lush pictures and read more about the project at his site Orörda Vatten.

La Caravane

Stills taken from the 1962 short documentary Vive Le Tour, which someone was nice enough to upload a subtitled version onto youtube: parts 1 and 2. These festive trucks proceed the peloton throwing out all kinds of free stuff to spectators posted along the day’s stage. This year’s caravan was 20km long (about 12.5 miles) and consisted of 160 cars, it took 45 minutes for the entire thing to pass by.

Scenes from Brimfield

So much to see, so little time.. and I’ve been told that July was the smallest show of the year!? This is only a tiny sampling of what I saw at Brimfield. It was interesting to see how some merchants took their time to present their goods while others just had tables strewn with junk, and some who made a point to put out no photography signs. Keep a close eye on my photo blog for a some extra photographs that will be surfacing in the near future. Hoping to be able to make it out to the September show..

USAAF Collector

While digging around for some specific military items I stumbled onto the flickr page of a collector who’s put together these role-specific kits made out of his collection. Check out the rest here in addition to other well presented pieces from his collection, such as these bomber jackets.

Newbaum’s Cotton Tape

Leather tape is expensive and foam tape is too spongey for me; I like cotton tape because it’s strong, cheap, and just plain feels good on the hands. Newbaum’s is a relatively new company offering bar tape (and soon rim tape) in a great selection of colors cut and dyed, with eco-friendly dyes, here in Philadelphia. Keep reading for a (mostly) step-by-step pictoral.
